OPINION: We treat interracial marriage as a benevolent act of a white man towards a ‘lucky’ black girl and I find that deeply objectionable.
It’s almost like it is not a union formed out of two consenting adults capable of loving each other and rather a case of a good hearted man that saw a black girl that needed rescuing (from what I don’t know) and played his part to make this planet better. Oh please.
In some ways, I just think that people do not even see colour when they fall in love. I think that what people in love see is love.
We, the outsiders are the ones that come in with our theories and start politicising these unions.
But of course, it would also be naive to ignore the fact these unions enter into a fray of race relations that are unequal and unjust.
And in that case, when the race that is currently considered superior in this world marries a race that is considered inferior, there is much ado about nothing.
But really, at the end of the day, it is just about love. Sometimes people disregard the things that are considered acceptable to the larger society in favour of things acceptable to the two of them. I see that in Meghan and Harry.
It is the big fuck you that world needed. We can all stop being judgemental now.
I don’t see it as oh Meghan got so lucky, nope, I see it as Harry the party animal (according to what I read) found a mature beautiful woman that was willing to whip him into line.
