Women are hitting South Africa’s streets to protest against gender violence
Thousands came out across the country protesting rape, violence & femicide

“We are tired, they are killing us, our kids, our kids are raped every single day. Today, it must end.”
South Africa has 1 of the world’s highest rates of violent crime.
Women & children are being raped & murdered at an alarmingly high rate.
1 in 5 South African women older than 18 has experienced gender-based violence (Statistics South Africa)
Researchers say 1 in 4 South African men has committed rape
The protests are part of a wider movement called #TotalShutdown which is pushing for change through methods including disrupting economic activity
